August 2008~ Hot Rods & Humidity!
Woodland Greetings everyone! Here we are in the middle of Summer already and Autumn is right around the corner! My wisteria is growing crazy on the trellis Skeetie made for me and I can't wait to see it bloom next Spring!
The Autumn is my favorite time of year and I love to be out and about outside at this glorious time of year. I also like to bake when things start cooling down a bit. All Summer long I collect up new recipes to try in the Fall. This year I've got some wicked Pumpkin Bars with Cream Cheese Frosting and a Red Velvet Cake. Skeetie will be my taste tester. I don't think he'll be adverse to that! Do you?
For now, we will try to get to as many fleas and car shows as we can while the weather is good and I know Skeetie wants to get some more bike runs in as well. I find the best stuff at fleas and even Ebay (as always!) Skeetie laughs at the appeal this Coney Island Steamer has for me, but I swear, this thing makes the most wicked hot dogs! You can even heat up your
bun on top!! I use this thing ALL the time. You gotta get one of these!
The upcoming Autumn is also a time when I delve back into the studio in a big way and now in my newly organized space, I can work more efficiently. Our friend Dave has given me a beautiful old drafting table which will be VERY instrumental in planning out new projects and designing new ink pieces as well!
A few weeks ago Skeetie was in Ohio for a class and me and Blanca ventured over to the Meadowlands Fair to see the World of Wonders side show. We went mid-week, after a heavy downpour and as a result there was no one there yet! We basically had the park to ourselves! We were thrilled to meet old Poohbah, the pygmy fire-eater who actually appeared in the original Wizard of Oz. I got to photograph him and even video tape his performance. These old timers are all but gone these days so it was SUCH a magical treat to meet him while he's still with us!
The latest Art Card by Tink© was inspired by this trip to the carnival and is called Our Lady of the Sideshow. It has a P.T. Barnum quote on the back and is avaiable now.
I received the beautiful Mamiyaflex camera and my friend Marika told me where I could get film for it. Marika is a Liscentiate of the Royal Photographic Society and an incredible photographer. She also knew of a specialist in this sort of camera who will "tune it up" for you and restore it to perfect working order. I also recently got my hands on an old Graflex Press camera. This would be the sort of camera Weegee would have used. I'm very excited about these cameras.
We had a smoldering heat wave again recently and on one of the hottest days we took the hot rod out for a magical cruise on beautiful country roads on the way to the annual Chester Car Show. We had a great time despite the heat. We even got to scope out some of the antique shops and have lunch with Anthony and Anthony who met us up there with their classic Caddy.
During the same heat wave I was at Jinx Proof getting the first session on my incredible Punchinello! It's large and involved and we were able to get the outline, most shading and some of the color done and I'll go back in a few weeks for the remaining color and shading which is going to be intense because most of the remaining work is in the very intricate and detailed face. I am very excited to see the finished product!
We also got to go back to the Vintage Car Store in Nyack to look at their amazing inventory as the last time we were up there it was closed. We stopped at Casa del Sol for some Mexican food with a fabulous Dia de los Muertos atmosphere that we loved and the food was incredible! The atmosphere was very cool and romantic. That day was alot more comfortable than those days during the heat wave even though we experienced a hurricane like storm come through!
Next month is our friend Professor Ouch's wicked Hot Rod Hoedown. A huge car show event that he runs every year. Ouch really knows how to throw an event! And even though Skeet has to go to Key West that Monday, I have just found out that we are gonna GO to The Hoedown! I am so excited! YAY! I can't wait! We have no space for luggage in the hot rod but I will gladly sit with the bags on me for the ride! ha! I have no problem with that! ALSO, Rebel Rodz magazine is starting up a new publication called Backfire and I have submitted some pics of Skeet's car and I'd SO love for him to be in the premiere issue!! (Due out in November!) I'll keep you posted on news!
Sitting out on the porch while I write, it's quiet and cool. My garden needs weeding. We had lots of heavy rains this Summer and it's tough to keep up with those weeds! They are running rampant. I just picked a nice red tomato before I missed it and it fell off the plant. Jersey tomatoes are the best! Nothing like a home grown tomato.
I did wind up doing some baking yesterday and made some fruit cobblers for my Dad & Skeetie. I got strawberries, blueberries and peaches. They didn't have any Rhubarb at the market but this combo of fruits will be delicious hot with a scoop of ice cream. Mick likes to wander around underfoot as I work in the kitchen and as he is totally blind I have to watch where I step so as not to hurt the little guy. My friend Wonderwoman Kim got me started on the cobbler thing and here's the one I devised that I like. It's quick and easy and oh so yummy!
Tink's Hot Rod Cobbler
3 cups fresh bluberries (fresh or frozen, YES you can make this year round!)
2 cups rhubarb (fresh or frozen)
Or any combo of fruits that make you smile!
1/2 cup regular rolled oats
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup packed brown sugar (I use dark)
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 cup butter (I use unsalted)
For filling, thaw fruit if frozen. Do not drain. Place fruit in 2 quart square baking dish.
For topping, in a medium bowl combine the oats, flour, brown sugar and cinnamon. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle topping all over fruit.
Bake in a 350 degree oven for 30-35 minutes (40 minutes for frozen fruit) or until fruit is tender and topping is golden.
Serve warm with a scoop of ice cream.
You can now get the magical new Art Card by Tink© Our Lady of the Sideshow imprinted on a number of fun products including t-shirts (men's, women's, children's, and even maternity! Also bags, mugs and doggy shirts!) at Cafe Press! Just click the Fun Stuff by Tink button! That's about all, I think. I'll be getting ready here shortly for an adventure. I hope the rest of your Summer holds magical adventures as well.
Ciao~
