August 2009

The Summer is flying by at 78rpm speed! but I have to say the weather has been superb once the rain went away! Perfect, temperature wise, and no humidity! Now that I have finally gotten the screen doors installed in the living room, I can open them up and get lots of fresh air and it's like bringing the great outdoors in! Vaggi loves them too! He feels like he's outside watching all the activity but he's safe and sound inside!

I've been having the best time perusing the flea markets and antique shops for antique and vintage records and trading with my other record collecting friends. I got a ton of great stuff from Diane, Cris and Bryan and among us we are really aquiring some fabulous players!! I also finally got my Be-Bop-a-Lula on 78 by Gene Vincent! I was so excited about that one and that is thanks to Cris.

I continue to visit Charlie once a week who has even more 45's than he has 78's so last trip I spent hours going through those. I've also recently discovered Record King in Hackensack which has walls and walls of 45's boasting 1/2 a million! The owner, Craig, also gave me one of those vintage 45 adapters so I could take it to Eric to have inked. I spend many a lunch hour in Record King!

I was back at Jinx to have that done on the 17th as well as a wicked Sun Records label on the elbow. I love both pieces! We always have a great time during our ink sessions at Jinx Proof! Next door to Jinx just happens to be a cool vintage record shop called Joannie Loves Tchotchkes and I got a huge stack of 45's in there before my ink appointment.

I have stumbled upon some crazy old psychobilly stuff like the Poets 'Dead', some Bobby 'Boris' Pickett and his Crypt Kickers and a bizarre old novelty by the Big Bopper called Purple People Eater Meets Witch Doctor. Amazingly fun stuff especially as we approach the favorite Halloween season!

I've also been seeking out all the Hot Rod tunes I can possibly find both on 45 and 78. I am determined to find every vintage automotive tune ever recorded. How fun this music is for Hot Rod Barbeques!

I have officially retired from the studio for now and I'm de cluttering the house a bit and sorting through and selling some things on Ebay. Things ARE selling so I hope that maybe the economy is beginning to turn around a bit. It's about time!

I've taken many very fun day trips now that the weather is nicer including a fabulous trek to the Bronx Zoo, many fun flea markets and all my fave antique centers around the area. I've been back to the wonderful, rural Belvidere flea market a few times now and really love that one. I need to get back to the Meadowlands Market and the Antique Garage, which I'll do soon.

Ovation television has been running remarkable blues documentaries all month and it really has me longing to do the Delta Blues road trip from Memphis to New Orleans. It's too hot for that area at this time of year but maybe February or March would be perfect!

Diane sent me 'The Sound of Building Coffins' by Louis Maistros and I have been lost in it ever since reading the first page! A simply amazing book taking place in New Orleans at the turn of the century encompassing all the fabulous NOLa staples like voodoo, the Red Light District & MUSIC! Maistros himself owns a record shop in New Orleans!

Most recent addition to the vintage phonograph collection is a FABULOUS 50's blonde wood Magnavox. The thing is so atomic and wonderful and it works amazingly with great sound. I am so thrilled with it and it has such a fun retro look. When closed up it looks just like an Eames-Era side table. My very favorite fun find of late and I also got a great sturdy & solid little Newcomb player and have a vintage Bakelite RCA on the way, too!

I've discovered a great local company called Hoboken Eddie's that makes incredible marinades for meats and fish that make for some wicked Summer grilling! Try some for your next grilling adventure!

Well, that is about all for this month! I am just back from Matsuya for sushi and am stuffed and getting TIRED! To bed early for me as I'll be venturing to Cold Springs tomorrow for some antiquing. Happy Summer everyone!

Peace~ Tink
