July 2009
Well, Summer is here and I can't believe how fast time is going! But Summer, so far, has been one of the wettest and coldest on record.
I was at Jinx recently getting my Be-Bop lettering done by Eric. It's fun and done in a great cartoon font and I just love it! Some of my ink was photographed for Tattoo Savage magazine at the Fangoria Horror Weekend so that was pretty fun and I dedicate that to Eric!
My obssession with old music is ever growing! I have learned alot about how to best play the old 78 records and thus the Califone is what I mainly use so as to reduce damage to the fragile old shellac records. I still love an old Fox Trot played on the crank players, though, the way they were originally heard. Blanca & I are talking about doing the Delta Blues road trip that I SO want to do. Maybe my cousin Donatella can drive up and meet us somewhere along that route as she's closer to it there in Florida.
Me, Donatella & her daughter Manz several years ago in Greenwich Village. Love you both xoxo
I also aquired a turntable with MP3 encoding so as to record some of the old stuff for the IPOD and if I do decide to do internet broadcasting.
I am planning to change the house around a bit to create a music room. It won't be an easy feat but it'll be cool when it's done and I'll just do it a little at a time and eventually it will be done. Who am I kidding? I never do ANYTHING a little at a time. I will probably jump in and work 18 hours straight...
Charlie has been going through his own collection and has promised to bring in more things for me to go through. We continue to find hidden stashes of 78's in the nooks and crannies of Platter World. Charlie gave me a 1952 Song Hits magazine with Vic Damone on the cover. He knows I am a big Vic Damone fan and said I had to have that!
I've been collecting old Blues, Doo-Wop, Country and my fave, odd novelty records. I have Lydia the Tattooed Lady by Orrin Tucker, Buchanan and Goodman's Flying Saucer, and a very strange find on a little independent label in San Fransisco called the Tattooed Lady pts 1 & 2. I also recently aquired the Tattooed Lady by Skeets McDonald!
My West Coast sister Diane and I did a fun record trade recently! I traded her my early Bing Crosby Brunswicks for some cool 50's stuff she had. She's concentrating on 20's- 30's music which corresponds with the era of her cabinet phonograph and I'm into it all.
New to the website is "Radio Tink?" which is the music page and if I do decide to take on internet broadcasting it will be on this page. Meanwhile it will have Tink's "Hit of the Week" which I will change every Sunday or so.
In a bad economy art falls by the wayside. People don't have the extra cash to buy things they don't really need and I find it very difficult to be inspired when things aren't selling so I will be retiring from the studio for now. Tinker's Witch Crafts is in its 7th year and it's been a fun journey. I don't have the funds or the space to store creations indefinitely so...I'll just continue the Atomic Fez's for now and all current web stock will remain available for sale. I'm tired and need a break. Right now I am going to concentrate on Tink!
I am reading 'Care of the Soul' by Thomas Moore and it's a great book. It is Archetypal Psychology which I am very interested in after being turned on to it by Jean Shinoda Bolen. Moore says our obssessive and addictive behaviors are not to be looked at as things that need to be "cured" but rather as tools that can lead us to the discovery of our soul stating that many of these things are not necessarily "bad" but actually things that we need as important to our development. That is a brilliant approach! I highly, highly recommend this book.
For Father's Day we took my Dad to one of my fave places, Pub 199. They have wicked seafood and the largest collection of extremely impressive taxidermy I have ever seen!
Looks like the weather is finally going to start looking better. I was able to get to the Bronx Zoo which I've wanted to do for awhile. It's been a long time since I was there. As I said in my blog, World of Darkness has been closed down and there were various displays in need of repair. The sky lift was no longer in service. I was told there was no funding and thus they can't keep some of these things going. If the economy continues this way, we'll be seeing alot more of this. Already so many little places that have been around for a long time, I've noticed, are closing down one by one. Support your local small businesses! When you need something go to the mom & pop shops in your town and keep them going. It's the American way and we have to save the things we love from extinction. Who wants to live in a World of corporate giants and mega stores? NOT ME!
As I sit and write this in the glorious sun and breeze a car alarm is singing with the repetitive symphony of a Phillip Glass composition and it is the only sound I hear. Music is EVERYWHERE!
This month's tune is Coney Island Baby by Lou Reed.
Happy 4th of July!
Peace~ Tink
