May 2009

April showers bring May flowers! Wow, did we have alot of April showers. But everything is green and budded and lots of stuff coming up in the garden. My wisteria, climbing up the antique box spring trellis, is in full bloom and looks amazing! It smells glorious!

Despite the weather we still had many excellent adventures. We did hit the Fata Morgana: the New Female Fantasists show in Greenpoint Brooklyn and it just happened to be a perfect weather day amongst all the soaking rain. The gallery was dark, Gothic and wonderful with lots of fun old taxidermy! We also found a great junk store over there where we found some cool stuff for a steal including Sheb Wooley's Purple People Eater on 78 and a Victorian corner shelf for the bathroom.

We hit one of our fave Cajun spots, the Delta Grill, and that reminded me that Maria was soon going to New Orleans. This time she was taking the Voodoo, Cemetery and the Bayou boat tours! OH! I want to go back there so bad!

Me and my Dad had a couple of excellent adventures last month as well. One when he took me to Long Island in a torrential rain storm to pick up a beautiful Sonora cabinet phonograph I bought and once when my Mom went on her annual Gettysburg trip when we went to the old Flower Hill Cemetery where my Great Grandmother is buried.

The Sonora dates from 1910 and is so beautiful. The sound is superb it just needs a couple of little fixes to make it perfect. Charlie put me in touch with someone who is an expert in repairing these old machines so I am happy about that. Also added to the collection is a remarkable and very unusual 1916 Stewart, a Brunswick portable and another Victrola that is in amazing condition! The big Nauck's Vintage record auction is this month and I have bids on several items so am really looking forward to the results.

I have a couple of the vintage crank machines on Ebay right now if any of you are interested in having one! The Waters Conley Phonola and the Silvertone are both listed for sale currently! These were some of my first machines and are wonderful starting points for anyone looking to get involved in this incredible hobby!

I've continued visiting Charlie once a week to go through his amazing collection of 78's and now that the town has made him clean out the windows, there are many that haven't been touched in years! I am finding great stuff there. I hadn't made any trips to the big thrift lately and decided to check it out a few days ago. To my utter amazement one of the workers was putting out someone's collection of '10's to '20's Victor records! I took them all and rescued them from their possible fate from damage being tossed about in a thrift shop. I've never come upon 78's over there and these were in glorious condition. I love them because they are of the era of my Sonora player and it seems fitting to listen to them on that beautiful piece of machinery!

Diane also recently found an antique phonograph as well! Diane and I often share similar obsessions and have great fun learning about and finding hard to find records.

I have lots of fabulous new fabric for Atomic Fez's including some fun Elvis, some pretty tiedye and a bunch of vintage upolstery pieces. Those will be made and listed soon! I've been Spring cleaning and listing things to Ebay here and there and selling lots of fun stuff to make room for new.

On the assemblage front I have some great new elements to incorporate into sculptures. I want to work on more large pieces like the one I made for Denise but those will be reserved for galleries as they are too large and heavy to ship. I also have many new things to use in the making of new Third Eye Pieces.

I hope many of you have discovered the 1000 Markets artists space. It's a wonderful selling venue with awesome artists. My Shop there at 1000 Markets is Tink's Atomic Universe and it is linked to my site here. I recently sold the latest Third Eye piece through 1000 Markets!

Of course, the Etsy shops Enchanted Forest and the Atomic Fez Factory are still in full swing and Etsy continues to be a magical place to buy amazing artist made pieces as well!

Me & Skeet continue our Antiques Tour '09 and have hit the massive Englishtown Flea Market where we got so many fun finds we had to make trips to the truck to put the bags away to be able to shop some more! We also hit the Meadowlands Flea recently and it turned out to be one of the first super hot days of the year. We got major sunburn but it was all worth it despite Skeetie trying to walk all day on the foot that a nail went through the week before requiring a tetanus shot and antibiotics. We just found out about Pennsy, a huge flea in the Philly area which we are looking forward to trying soon, as well! May also holds the fabulous GaGa Arts festival!

I love when the weather turns warm like it's been. Everything is in bloom and the trees are filling in nicely. Caravaggio had his first park adventure and didn't know where to look or smell first! He also saw his first goose. It's fun watching the little guy explore the world that is all new to him! Well, that is about all for now! I have decided to simply update the "News" button here on the website on or about the 1st of each month rather than e-mailing the newsletter so you'll have to check here for it from now on! Enjoy the Spring!

Peace~
Tink
