October 2008~ All Hallow's Eve
Here we are going into the most beautiful time of the year! The colors of the trees and the beautiful Autumn weather is upon us. I love this time of year!
Last month I had that harrowing experience with the antibiotic from hell that I could not take, much less in 800mg quantities. It was SO scary! I really thought I was having a stroke and/or was going to die. I am so happy to be back to 'normal' and feeling good again!
Due to a series of Lemony Snickets type unfortunate events we were unable to attend the Hot Rod Hoedown and that was such a bummer because Professor Ouch said it was totally amazing this year. Next year I'll be there for sure!
Eric did another amazing ink piece on me recently and it is very in keeping with not only the low brow theme of the sleeve but also with the season! It is my fabulous Dirty Donny Frankenstein with 3D glasses and a third eye. I thought the third eye was SO appropriate as my Third Eye Collection has been such a fun and popular line for me! He also did a larger nautical star and a handful of candy corns. We'll be doing the elbow spider web in a few days. All the main elements of that sleeve are now in place and we just have to do some fabulous filler. Ox suggested flames as filler. We also talked about filling with little miniature elements that have meaning for me in life & art. We'll see! I got this latest work done just before Jinx Proof closed for renovations. The newly expanded Jinx will be amazing! They truly need the space.
I have been having CRAZY dreams and lots of them. My dreamscape has been very busy but I do get very tired from all the dreamland adventures. They run the gamut from somewhat scary to totally insane. I love waking from a crazed dream and being puzzled as to where the HELL did that come from??
Halloween, All Hallow's Eve, Samhain is this month and I love this holiday. It is the time of the rolling year when the veils between the worlds are the thinnest and all kinds of magic can happen. So many fun things go on around the country at this time of the year. New England has always been a favorite place to venture to at this time with all of it's history and New Orleans is really appealing to me now with it's OH SO haunted past! It's been quite awhile since I have been down there and I long to get back. I am thinking about a trip to Haunted Savannah to visit my friend Thief who opened a wicked tattoo shop there called Seppuku Tattoo. This is also the time when I get the desire to Ghost Hunt with my Ghost Hunting friends Diane, Rich & Alan. Too bad all of us are so far apart! We'll all have to hunt in our respective areas and share the results. I think I will take my friend Kim over to the cemetery in Hackensack one day soon and we'll do a little hunting and photographing. That cemetery dates to the late 17th century. Kimmy's totally morbid, like me ;-) I've been wanting to photograph her anyway.
Here's a fun recipe for you for the Autumn baking season! You can make this one clear through to Thanksgiving!
Tink's Haunted Pumpkin Patch Bars
4 eggs
1 c salad oil
2 c sugar
1 (15 oz.) can pumpkin
2 c flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp nutmeg
Frosting
1 (6 oz.) pkg cream cheese
3/4 stick butter
1 TBSP cream or milk
1 tsp vanilla
4 c powdered sugar
(bars) Mix first 4 ingredients in a large bowl. Sift the dry ingredients and add to above. Stir. Mix well and pour into greased and floured pan, 12 x 8 x 1. Bake at 350 for 25 to 30 minutes.
(frosting) Beat cheese, butter, vanilla and cream together until soft. Add powdered sugar until correct consistency to spread. Spread frosting on cooled bars. Cut into 2 x 3 inch bars.
Makes 36 bars.
And they freeze well!
Someone told me the Farmer's Almanac tells us we are supposed to have a horrific Winter. I don't look forward to that in any way, shape or form! The Spring, Summer and Fall fly by and the dreary, cold Winter seems endless, especially if we happen to get a bad one. So far it seems to have gotten cold very quickly here in the Nor'east and that is not a good indication...
I have gotten some great stuff at the various flea markets I've hit over the last couple of weeks. Many dealers put out their vintage Halloween stuff now and Home Goods always has fabulous vintage inspired Halloween decor. I need to get up there before that stuff is all picked through.
I have to say, the holiday season is FAST approaching! I haven't even given thought to holiday shopping yet and normally I am started by now! Don't let the season sneak up on you! I plan to make a list soon and get started. As I have said before, we at TWC are here to help with your holiday shopping having all sorts of fun things in every price range.
I have a bunch of fabulous new fabrics for Atomic Fez's and will get those together here soon. They are such fun pieces and so pretty and funky to wear. There are so many colors and patterns. Between the website and Etsy, there is sure to be one that matches most any personality.
My bud Aurora went to the last day of Astroland amusement park in Coney Island. They closed that down for good on Septemeber 7th. What a sad thing to see. That old landmark is gone. Thankfully the Coney Island Sideshow and Museum has purchased and is renovating their building so that should remain a Coney Island mainstay.
Well, soon everything will be bursting with color and pumpkins and Autumn decor will be all around. David, my next door neighbor, has put out the Hot Rod Ghoul on the front lawn. Applefest in Warwick is coming up and normally when we go there we hit Manno's Farms for pumpkins. We've been getting pumpkins there for years and it is a beautiful Autumn drive up to that part of NY State.
Changes are afoot in the Woodland what with the changing leaves and then the falling leaves and change is often good. Autumn is a time for taking it inside, resting up the way nature does for Spring's rebirth. My Woodland is my sanctuary and it is a magical, mystical private space where magic happens every day. Not too much makes me happier than sitting on my deck on a warm Autumn day with a cup of tea or a witch's brew, depending on the time of day. If I could live in the country with nothing but land surrounding me I'd be quite happy! My Woodland is a good alternative, though. It's quiet and peaceful and filled with nature.
Life is a very spiritual venture and along the way we learn things about ourselves and others and grow from every experience! We are the sum of our experiences but we can shape our own reality. It's very important to create the life you wish to live. It's too short to allow others to form it for you. Do what you want, LIVE how you want and relish in every moment. It's gone too fast. I stumbled upon a wonderful quote recently and I want to share it with you: "Instead of brooding over your fate, make written plans for your destiny!" That is what I intend to do.
Happy Halloween! I love you all~
